Local roots, global impact: how Snapper Services’ ticketing system gave rise to Mosaiq, our worldwide transit intelligence platform

We're still buzzing. Last week our team packed into the Embassy Theatre for the Wellington Gold Awards in New Zealand and walked out having taken the top spot in the Technology category. It's a genuinely humbling thing.

Mosaiq by Snapper Services has already been working with public transport operators and authorities around the world, turning their data into actionable insights to improve networks. Closer to home in New Zealand, we're better known for our ticketing heritage, so this win felt like a good moment to share how we got here.

It started with a tap

Snapper Services got its start in Wellington, building the tap-on, tap-off ticketing that thousands of Kiwis now use without giving it a second thought. Wellingtonians know it best as that little red card with the fish on it, tucked into wallets and bags all over the city. Tag on, tag off, catch the bus and train. It's such an ordinary part of daily life now that it's easy to forget someone had to turn the idea into a reality that stood up to commuter scrutiny. That ticketing work won us this same Technology award back in 2010, and it’s proof that good transit technology can genuinely change how a city moves.

For years we kept coming back to a bigger question: ticketing tells you who paid, but what if we could tell you how an entire transport network is actually performing, and where there’s room to make it even better?

Mosaiq by Snapper Services is born

That question is what led us to build Mosaiq, which we launched in 2023. It's not a replacement for our ticketing business; it's a new platform born out of everything we learned running it. Mosaiq is a transit intelligence suite: it turns live bus data into insights that transport operators and authorities can use to improve network performance. Snapper Services now runs both sides of the business side-by-side, ticketing and transit intelligence, each one sharpening the other.

We've grown fast since. In just three years, Mosaiq now processes more bus data than any other solution on the market, ingesting over 12 billion bus "heartbeats" (GPS pings) every month. Today, 39 transit operators and authorities across more than 10 countries trust Mosaiq to make confident, evidence-based improvements to their networks. Our team has grown right alongside it too, with people now based across New Zealand, the UK, and Europe.

Our CEO, Miki Szikszai, puts it best: "Every improvement to a bus network means more people choosing public transport. That's how we make cities better." That's really the whole point of what we're building. Every bus that runs a little smarter, a little more reliably, is one more person choosing to leave the car at home.

Kiwi roots, global mission

We’re a global product with local Kiwi roots in public transport. It's a grand mission to optimise every bus in the world, but it's one we're genuinely passionate about. We're chasing that mission with data from transport networks everywhere, from Wellington to West Yorkshire and beyond. Winning this category again, sixteen years after our first win and for a totally different product, feels like a proper full-circle moment. Really, though, it's just a marker of where we're headed next.

Thank you to Pertronic Industries Limited for supporting the Technology category, and congratulations again to our fellow finalists, Autohive AI, Koan, PaySauce, and Silverstripe. It's good company to be in.

So, if this is your first proper introduction to Mosaiq: we're New Zealand born, globally established, and moving fast.
