Strengthen your network insights with flat files

Real-time data tells you what's happening on your network right now. It doesn't always tell you why. That's where flat file augmentation comes in. Real-time data tells you what's happening on your network right now. It doesn't always tell you why.

That's where flat file augmentation comes in. Our team at Mosaiq by Snapper Services can now enrich your real-time Mosaiq Insights data with flat files, such as ticketing machine data or vehicle telematics feeds, for a more complete picture of bus network performance.

In this way, we build the insights from the ground up, helping you know where a vehicle was and when: allowing things like stop arrival, dwell and depart to all be calculated with increased accuracy.

Why it matters

Real-time location feeds don't always capture the whole story. Telematics feeds can enrich vehicle location reporting by filling in the gaps with data addressing fuel use, dwell time, odometer readings, speed, or braking. Similarly, ticketing data can reveal the relationship between service reliability and passenger volumes.

Combined, each additional source builds a stronger, more contextualised dataset. Instead of just reporting on what happened in your network, you can make links between data sources and start to understand why it happened.

A more contextualised dataset supports better decisions about your network. You can dig into the factors behind reliability issues, not just the symptoms, by cross-referencing patterns like dwell time at high-boarding stops or speed events. You can see how service performance actually affects passenger demand, and use that to inform scheduling and resourcing decisions. And you can build a fuller evidence base for planning, funding, and reporting conversations, backed by data your organisation already collects.

Flat files also help when real-time Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) aren't available at all. In these cases, flat file imports provide historical performance data, so your network's story stays complete.

What you need

Flat file augmentation works with a few requirements in place:

  • File format: Comma-Separated Values (CSV) or another text-based format, with column headers included or a schema document supplied.
  • Schedule data: A valid General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) source is mandatory. Flat files can't work without it.

Operators often hold more data than reaches the real-time feed, including extra stop events or a full historical record. Flat file augmentation puts that data to work.

Because flat files come from your own systems, ticketing machines, telematics providers, and beyond, any data quality issues sit upstream of Mosaiq. Our team will work with you to get the most out of what you already have.
